Overview of Omega Tower (from Omega Park sign)

Overview

Officially, it is called “Tsushima Omega Station. (Also known as “Omega Tower”) This facility was built by the Japan Coast Guard based on a plan to introduce the Omega Navigation System, of which there are eight in the world, Tsushima being the only one in Asia. (The Omega Navigation System is a system that measures the phase difference between the radio waves (very long waves) emitted from two Omega stations and determines the distance between them to determine the current position of the vessel while navigating.) Construction of the Tsushima Omega Station began in October 1970 and was completed in 1975 after numerous difficult construction projects. The station was put into service in May of the same year, and since then, it has contributed to the safe navigation of the sea route under international cooperation.
However, with the development of satellite communication technology in recent years, the station was closed at the end of September 1997, handing over its functions to GPS (Global Positioning System) and other services. There were calls to preserve the symbolic steel tower (photo at right), but due to maintenance and management issues, the decision was made to dismantle it, and dismantling work began in 1998. (Dismantling work began in 1998 (completed at the end of March 2000).
Part of the dismantled steel tower was sunk as a fishing reef in the nearby sea, and the base of the 10-meter-high tower, a 3-meter-diameter steel pipe, and part of the wire connecting the tower to the ground are displayed as a monument in this park.
